Jewish Songs. In Russian.
Preserving, Reviving, and Further Developing the Heritage of Jewish Songs through Russian and Now English Adaptations
About the Project
Our Story
The genesis of “Jewish Songs. In Russian.” traces back to a heartfelt personal journey. Vladimir Kin, known professionally as Walter Kin, grew up in the sunny city of Derbent, Dagestan, during the Soviet era. At just six years old, young Volodya was captivated by the enchanting voice of Roberto Loretti. With no internet or translations available, he clung to his mother's vinyl record, yearning to understand the Italian lyrics. This early passion for music and cultural exploration ignited a lifelong dedication to bridging musical traditions across languages and cultures.
Our Mission
At the heart of “Jewish Songs. In Russian.” lies a commitment to cultural preservation and innovation. Jewish music, with its deep roots in Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, and other Jewish languages, holds significant historical and emotional value. By adapting these songs into Russian, we ensure that this invaluable heritage remains vibrant and accessible to new generations. Our project emphasizes:
- Cultural Preservation: Maintaining the authenticity and emotional depth of original Jewish songs while presenting them in a new linguistic context.
- Accessibility: Making Jewish musical traditions available to Russian-speaking audiences, including those who may not be familiar with Hebrew or Yiddish.
- Cultural Exchange: Promoting mutual understanding and appreciation between Jewish and Russian cultures through shared musical experiences.
The Role of Olga Anikina
A cornerstone of our project is the exceptional talent of Olga Anikina, whose genius in lyric adaptation breathes new life into each song. Olga’s meticulous translations ensure that the essence, emotion, and cultural significance of the original compositions are preserved and enhanced. Her poetic prowess transforms traditional Jewish melodies into Russian renditions that resonate deeply with listeners, fostering a renewed connection to these timeless classics.
